Fueling in the Spooky Season

Fueling during a holiday season can be difficult, especially if you need help with how to do it. Reilly Beatty, a registered dietitian, highlights how this can be made accessible. She starts by emphasizing that you can still eat candy, enjoy something sweet, and obtain your goals on the field. Three key points are stressed throughout the article: fueling like an athlete, not skipping post-workout fuel after training even if you plan to have candy, and even using Halloween candy as a pre-workout fuel. Every athlete should be able to enjoy the holidays with friends and family while staying on track with their fueling plan.

Fueling like an athlete was highlighted because Beatty wanted to ensure that athletes, in particular, were not cutting or skipping meals to save calories to allow themselves to have candy. She states, “Your focus should still be fueling your body like the top-level athlete you are. This is not meant to be restrictive, but remember, you can have things you enjoy (or some candy) every single day” (fueling on Halloween). She shows that following a fueling plan can maximize your recovery!

Secondly, not skipping a post-workout fuel is just as important, especially as she states, “post-workout fuel is still essential to help recover and repair the muscles after training” (fueling on Halloween). Thirdly, you can add sweet treats like your Halloween candy to help increase energy during training. For example, Beatty suggests trying Swedish fish, starburst, or Sour Patch Kids. It is essential to enjoy the holidays with your family and friends and all that they offer. Food should not be the thing you are afraid of this Halloween!
