Love Your Heart Love Your Food

The leading cause of death in America is heart disease. A person’s food choices and lifestyle can have large impacts on his or her heart health. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers four steps on how to help prevent and control risk factors of heart disease, so a person can have a healthier heart.

Step one is to make healthy food choices. These foods include nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fatty fish. Reduce the amount of added salt, sugar, and fat (especially trans fat and saturated fat) consumed. Step two is to be active. Engaging in moderate exercise regularly can help the body lower blood pressure, control stress, and control weight. Check with a physician before beginning a new workout regimen. Step three is to manage stress. Find a way to healthfully reduce stress and that works for you. Examples include doing yoga, playing ping pong, and walking. Step four is to not smoke. Smoking increases a person’s risk for heart disease.
