Irritable Bowel Syndrome, also known as IBS, is a chronic or recurring series of gastrointestinal symptoms that may cause distress for those who have it. IBS affects both the small and large intestines and though there is no specific cause, many factors contribute to IBS. A few contributing factors include genetics, mental health disorders, food sensitivities or intolerances, or infections in intestinal bacteria. Specific foods and stress may trigger IBS symptoms. Common symptoms of IBS include; abdominal pain, cramping, constipation, bloating, or gassiness. IBS can be better managed by working to understand what causes episodes of discomfort in an individual and then working to minimize them. Simple changes in eating habits can help to offer relief and reduce flare-ups. Establishing regular eating habits by eating meals around the same times every day may help to regulate an individual's bowels. Eating small frequent meals instead of large ones will ease the amount of food moving through the intestinal tract. Increasing the amount of fiber-rich foods in the diet helps to move the food through the intestines. When increasing the amount of fiber it is also important to drink enough water to avoid constipation.
