Importance of Water

As the temperatures rise in the summer, it is more important than ever to ensure we are consuming enough water to keep our bodies hydrated. Water makes up about 60% of your body and is essential for keeping all of your body systems functioning. Throughout the day, water is lost from the body by sweating, urinating, and regular bowel movements. If more water is lost than taken in, the body can become dehydrated. Dehydration can cause dizziness, headaches, or digestion problems. Severe dehydration can lead to kidney failure, heart problems, and possibly even death and requires immediate medical attention. Different factors impact how much water is needed for each individual such as age, sex, height, etc. The adequate intake level for women is 11.5 cups per day and for men is 15.5 cups per day. Good sources of water include plain water, a variety of unsweetened beverages, fat-free milk, sparkling water, and many foods with high water content such as watermelon, lettuce, strawberries, and celery. A few ways to increase water intake throughout the day include carrying a refillable water bottle, drinking water throughout the day as opposed to just at meals, adding a flavor enhancer such as a lemon wedge or fresh basil, and opting for water when eating out instead of sodas or other beverages.
