Types of Food to Support Memory

With the first few weeks of school complete, exams will be starting soon. The proper diet can enhance brain health and aid in memorization. According to research, the Mediterranean Diet is composed of nutrient-rich foods that can boost cognitive function such as fruits, vegetables, and food sources high in omega-3 fatty acids. High consumption of vegetables such as broccoli and dark leafy greens can enhance memory capacity. Dark berries contain a high amount of anthocyanins and flavonoids, compounds that are rich in antioxidants, that support memory function. Omega-3 fatty acids or DHA’s are very important in regards to brain health. Bluefin tuna and salmon are two of the best fish to eat when trying to increase DHA intake. If consuming seafood is not an option, supplements such as fish oil can be taken in substitution, but only after consulting a doctor or registered dietitian. Walnuts are a good food source that is beneficial for brain function and heart health. A proper diet will not magically improve memory, but over time it will support good health.
