Is Gardening Linked to Improved Body Image?

Body image is a measure of an individual’s sense of appreciation and acceptance of their own body and its functions. New research has been conducted to measure various levels of body image among gardeners and non-gardeners. A series of questionnaires were used to assess this idea. It was found that those who practice gardening had significantly higher levels of body appreciation, body pride, and appreciation for their body’s functionality when compared to the group of non-gardeners. The results from this study adds to previous research that has shown an association with improved psychological wellbeing and physical health among individuals who garden. Viren Swami is a professor of Social Psychology and had stated, “Positive body image is beneficial because it helps to foster psychological and physical resilience, which contributes to overall wellbeing.” The results from this study can be utilized among the population as a way to improve body image and other aspects of wellbeing.
