What Are Chia Seeds?

Chia seeds are commonly enjoyed as an ingredient in smoothies, oatmeal and yogurt, but we all have wondered what chia seeds actually are. Derived from Central America, the Aztecs were the first people to include chia seeds in their diet. Chia seeds are produced by a plant that is a member of the mint family. This plant grows in the dessert and is called Salvia hispanica.

So why should we eat chia seeds? These seeds serve as a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc. Also, one ounce of chia seeds can provide around 10 grams of fiber! Researchers are studying chia seeds and their connection with improving cardiovascular risk factors, but studies also suggest they provide other positive health benefits. Since chia seeds can be eaten raw, they can easily become a part of your diet by being added to foods such as yogurt, cereal and vegetables. Because of their absorbent properties, chia seeds can also be added to cooked dishes as well.

Fun fact: did you know the sprouts of a chia plant are also edible? Try sprucing up your diet this summer by simply adding chia seeds!
