Are Canned Foods a Healthy Choice?

Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is not always as convenient as the 1,500 different canned foods that can be found in almost any supermarket. Below are a few benefits of canned foods.
Shelf-stable:  Canned foods last longer than fresh fruits and vegetables and are also well-preserved by the canning process alone. You can have canned foods for over a year if the expiration date allows, however it is recommended that they should be rotated every other year.
Healthful: Recent studies have shown that canned foods are just as beneficial as fresh food itself. The lycopene found in canned tomatoes can be greater utilized by the body than that found in the fresh tomato. Lycopene has been shown to prevent prostate cancer in men.
Quick to make and easily accessible: You can take these cans to go as they only take a few minutes to warm up since they are cooked and ready to eat.
Sealed-Shut: It is very difficult to damage canned goods so the contents inside are almost always guaranteed to be fresh. Check for openings, leakage or dents to be safe.
Safety First: Once a can is opened, be sure to use it immediately. If there are leftovers, refrigerate and keep in a clean container.
