Link Between Acne and Diet?

More than 17 million Americans suffer from acne. It can influence the life of those who suffer from acne by causing anxiety, social withdrawal, and depression. For years studies have been conducted to see if different foods in the diets of people who suffer from acne have an effect on the severity of acne. In the 1800’s to about the 1960’s studies concluded that foods such as sugar, chocolate, and fat were linked to this condition. Later, in the 1960’s studies began to discredit diet as a cause of acne. Recently, a literature review of the studies conducted between 1960 and 2012 was done to try to determine the truth behind this argument. It was found that high glycemic index foods and frequent dairy consumption are the leading factors in finding a link between diet and acne development. Although there is a link it is important to note that diet does not cause acne it just influences it. This important discovery helps put the link between diet and acne into a better perspective.
