Trends in Dietetics

Registered dietitians are seeing a change in the field they are working in. One specific change is going to be the need for dietitians to work with an older population. Gerontology is the study of older people and the aging process. This growth is due to the aging of the “baby boomers”. By 2020 the number of people age 65 and over is expected to be 55 million. With this large influx of older people, most dietitians are going to have to treat this population sometime in their career. AND recognizes this change coming and offers a certification in geriatrics. This certification can be beneficial to RDs. This new trend will give RDs new job opportunities.
