Antioxidants Protecting Healthy Cells

Carotenoids

Foods high in carotenoids include red, orange, deep yellow, and dark green leafy vegetables such as sweet potatoes, spinach, and carrots.

Vitamin E

The main role of vitamin E is that it is an antioxidant. It helps prevent cancer, heart disease, and cataracts, according to research. It works hand in hand with other vitamins such as vitamin C to give protection against other diseases. Vitamin E can be found in vegetable oils, wheat germ, whole grains, and peanut butter.

Vitamin C

The most widely known antioxidants. It helps prevent infections in your body as well as cell damage, it helps produce collagen and aids with iron absorption. Vitamin C can be found in strawberries, broccoli, potatoes, and citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits.

Challenges to Healthful Eating

Most adults should be eating 1 ½ cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables on a daily basis. Fresh, frozen, canned, and dried fruits are all acceptable; try avoiding frozen and canned fruits that have added sugars and salts.

Many authorities recommend getting antioxidants from food sources rather than from supplements, as some antioxidant supplements have actually been shown to increase the risk of cancer.
