Fermented products have been on the rise recently as they have been becoming more popular. Diet can have a large effect on mental health and recent studies have shown that some foods are particularly good at positively impacting the brain. Fermented foods are a source of tryptophan which is an amino acid key to the production of serotonin. Serotonin is a messenger in the brain key to influencing several brain functions including mood. Recent research has shown that out of the 200 fermented foods studies, almost all of them showed some ability to have the potential to improve gut and brain health. Further research is needed to fully understand which groups of fermented foods have the greatest effect on the brain. By including fermented foods in the diet, an individual can naturally support their mental health along with general well-being.
