How an RDN can help with Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to make or use insulin, causing high blood glucose levels. In order to manage diabetes, the key is to maintain a healthy blood sugar level. Something that can help control blood sugar is choosing nutritious foods and watching portion sizes. To help treat diabetes, a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) will provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT), or medical nutrition therapy. In this MNT the RDN will provide a diagnosis and a therapeutic and counseling service to the patient. This can be covered under many insurances including, Medicare Part B.  During the MNT, the RD can provide carbohydrate counting, meal plans, healthy food choices, exchange lists, and behavior strategies. An RDN is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist are RDN who works specifically with people that have diabetes to help manage and improve their health outcomes. An RDN can help someone figure out what type of therapy is best for the patient. A dietitian can put together a meal plan that works with the person's individual food preferences, level of physical activity, and lifestyle choices. When visiting an RDN for diabetes, people need four to five visits during a three to six-month period.
