Types of B-Vitamins

B-vitamins are important for the body because they support the metabolism and contribute to the body's ability to produce energy, and several of the B-vitamins have additional functions. Vitamin B6 or pyridoxine helps produce insulin, fights infection, and creates non-essential amino acids (protein building blocks). Foods that contain vitamin B6 are bananas, beans, chicken, fish, nuts, pork, and potatoes. Folate or folic acid is important during pregnancy because it helps reduce the risk of spine and brain deformities. Sources of folate include dietary supplements, enriched grains, fruits, fortified breakfast cereals, and vegetables. Vitamin B12 or cobalamin helps create new red blood cells, and having a deficiency could lead to anemia. Sources of vitamin B12 include dairy products, dietary supplements, fortified breakfast cereals, eggs, fish, meat, and poultry.
