The Food Allergy Research and Education estimates that two children in every classroom have a food allergy. A food allergy is a reaction caused by the immune system attacking a food protein that the body mistakes as a threat. Some food allergy symptoms are swelling of the mouth, throat, face, or skin; trouble breathing; and stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. Some of the most common food allergies in children include peanuts, milk, shellfish, and tree nuts. Before avoiding any food categories get a diagnosis from a doctor. After your child is diagnosed with any food allergens, be sure to avoid those foods. For more information on healthful eating habits while avoiding allergens, consult a registered dietitian.
