Constant dieting can lead to many patterns of unhealthy habits/disordered eating, which can have negative effects on you both physically and mentally. However, a different approach may counteract those effects, allowing you to live a healthy lifestyle.
Intuitive eating refers to eating according to your internal hunger cues, such as a growling stomach rather than external incentives and emotions. Studies show that those who practice intuitive eating have better psychological health, improved body satisfaction, as well as greater metabolism.
Some tips to practice intuitive eating include:
- Stop labeling foods as “good” or “bad,” and enjoy foods in moderation. The majority of what you eat determines health, not one meal.
- If you’re hungry, allow yourself to eat a balanced meal or snack. The longer you wait to satisfy hunger, the more likely you are to make a poor food choice.
- Recognize your feelings and deal with them in positive ways rather than turning to food for comfort. Some positive outlets could be exercising, journaling, or calling a friend.
- Appreciate your body rather than punish it. Exercise in ways that challenge you but you also enjoy.
- Eat good to feel good. Notice foods you eat that energize you and bring you satiety.
