During the warmer months, it’s not
unusual to wake up craving something cold for breakfast. While a chilly smoothie or a bowl of cereal
may be tasty and nutritious options, you may find yourself wanting to eat all
the food when lunchtime rolls around. If
your stomach is grumbling and your hungry just hours after breakfast, it’s very
easy to overeat come lunchtime.
A new study showed that eating a
bowl of instant oatmeal for breakfast helps to curb lunchtime hunger. The researchers compared participant’s
lunchtime hunger after eating a breakfast of either a popular oat-based cold
cereal or instant oatmeal. As it turns
out, those who ate the instant oatmeal ate significantly less at lunch than
those who had the breakfast consisting of the oat-based cold cereal.
The satiety achieved after eating a
bowl of instant oats may be attributed to the “higher molecular viscosity of
the beta-glucan” which is a type of soluble fiber found in the instant
oatmeal. It is also important to take
into consideration the processing of each breakfast product. The oat-based cold cereal goes through more
processing than does the instant oatmeal, which leads to changes in the oat
fiber resulting in reduced satiety.
Instant oatmeal is filling, versatile,
and can be made in a pinch. Just stir in
your liquid of choice and top with fresh berries, nuts, or really anything you
wish! As the cooler months roll around,
it is highly likely you will wake up wanting something toasty. To avoid becoming overly hungry at lunch, take
advantage of the brisk fall mornings by making yourself a comforting bowl of
instant oatmeal.
