Portion sizes that
Americans choose are getting larger and larger. To combat this trend the
University of New Hampshire has created a new plate for their dining halls. Two
years ago the government ditched the food pyramid and started using the MyPlate
figure. The University of New Hampshire took this a step further by printing
the dietary guidelines directly on the plates students use in the dining halls.
This allows students to visually see what their portion sizes are compared to
what they should be without having to do extra work. While some students say
that the plates do not affect their food choices, while others claim it has made them
more aware of what they are eating. While the outcome is not certain, the use
of these plates seems to be a step in helping people choose healthier meals.
