Medical Nutrition Therapy Proves Effective and Low-Cost

This new study observed patients using the Blue Cross insurance with and without Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). The MNT part of the health plan has been used to help patients who are obese or having obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia and hypertension. The insurance covers up to six visits each year with a Registered Dietitian for nutrition therapy and counseling to discuss health issues; visits to a physician, and educational and behavior change tools like reference books, step counters and a lifestyle journal; and online tools like an exercise tracker. All patients in the study were measured by their progress based on changes in weight, body mass index, waist circumference and exercise. Individuals who received full MNT were more successful at maintain or losing weight and had twice the odds of achieving clinically significant weight loss and were more likely to exercise in the future, than those who did not have MNT. The cost of the MNT benefit in the health plan was only $0.03 per month for each member, and has proven to help people safely lose weight and improve lifestyle.
