Decreasing Salt Could Save Lives

A new study from the American Heart Association determined that on average, Americans consume about 3,600 milligrams of sodium daily. The recommended daily intake is about 2,200 milligrams. Much of the sodium consumed is found in processed foods such as cereals, breads, and soups. High sodium intake has been linked with high blood pressure as well as cardiovascular disease. If Americans work to reduce their sodium intake closer to the recommended amount, we could save a half-million lives and more from premature deaths over the next decade.  In an effort to reduce your sodium intake, look for reduced and low sodium products and reach for more fruits and vegetables for snacks.
